چکیده

Plasma temperatures in the range 25 to 2310 K have been measured using a cryogenic, ultra-high vacuum, pure-electron plasma trap. The rate n at which the temperatures parallel and perpendicular to the applied magnetic field relax to a common value has been measured over the temperature range 28 to 3.8310 K and the magnetic field range 20 to 60 kG. This rate n is closely related to the plasma collision frequency. When the cyclotron radius rc is large compared to the classical distance of closest approach b (rc /b@1), the measured values of n are in agreement with conventional collision theory. When the cyclotron radius is small compared to the classical distance of closest approach (rc /b!1), n drops precipitously as rc /b is decreased, in agreement with the many-electron adiabatic invariant theory of O’Neil and Hjorth. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. @S1070-664X~96!00604-0#

Spin noise spectroscopy in GaAs (110) quantum wells: access to intrinsic spin lifetimes and equilibrium electron dynamics.

In this Letter, the first spin noise spectroscopy measurements in semiconductor systems of reduced effective dimensionality are reported. The nondemolition measurement technique gives access to the otherwise concealed intrinsic, low temperature electron spin relaxation time of n-doped GaAs (110) quantum wells and to the corresponding low temperature anisotropic spin relaxation. The Brownian mot...

Low-order modes as diagnostics of spheroidal non-neutral plasmas.

Many experiments requiring the confinement of charged particles have been performed in Penning traps. High-precision measurements of magnetic moments of fundamental particles [1) have been made, and atomic spectroscopy in an isolated trap environment is of potential use for the next generation of atomic clocks [2]. Similar traps are employed in ion cyclotron mass spectrometry [3], and for exper...

Low-order longitudinal modes of single-component plasmas

The low-order modes of spheroidal, pure electron plasmas have been studied experimentally, both in a cylindrical eiectrode structure and in a quadrupole trap. Comparison is made between measurements of mode frequencies, recent analytical theories, and numerical simulations. Effects considered include trap anharmonicity, image charges, and temperature. Quantitative agreement is obtained between ...

Development of Two-Fluid Magnetohydrodynamics Model for Non-Equilibrium Anisotropic Plasma Flows

A multi-species magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model based on an extended fluid dynamics description for each plasma species is proposed for the prediction of the flow and behavior of fully ionized non-equilibrium anisotropic plasmas. In particular, a two-fluid (ions and electrons) plasma model is described that makes use of a 10-moment or Gaussian anisotropic moment closure to model ion and electro...

Correlation effects on the temperature-relaxation rates in dense plasmas.

We present a model for the rate of temperature relaxation between electrons and ions in plasmas. The model includes self-consistently the effects of particle screening, electron degeneracy, and correlations between electrons and ions. We successfully validate the model over a wide range of plasma coupling against molecular-dynamics simulations of classical plasmas of like-charged electrons and ...
